  1. 7-Zip works well , I have used it for years and it is free , get the 64bit version if running 64bit Windows... M.
  2. If you can upgrade to Windows 7 64bit then the extra 3 GB of Ram will help all programs , all your other software should run fine as 64 bit Windows will run 32bit software too, no problem. M.

    Problem with dormers

the Dormers are too large for the section of ceiling you are trying to insert then into by the looks of it , usually the program stops you inserting them if the roof plane is too small ut since it is one roof plane (outside) it is still letting you insert them partially into the flat ceiling plane, so I'd try making them smaller height wise and see if they form correctly ?. Is the ceiling of the dormer the same height as the room? 2.5m I think ? not 2.4? M.
  4. it looks like what is called z-fighting in the 3rd pic , it is where two materials are trying to occupy the same space ,some videocards handle it better than others so make sure you are on recent drivers, however in the 3rd pic it appears you chimney isn't cutting out the roof so perhaps it has something to do with that. The bright shiny roof is unusual so that maybe a videocard issue toar the roof above looks fine....? you don't say what year/version you have so I am unsure if you can cut the roof plane back around the stone chimney or not to let it extend thru the roof as a rectangle , it appears only one sided at least in the 3rd pic. M.
  5. Eric has it right , you just need to measure the angles of the existing Roof eg with a Level "App" on your phone (or guessimate it like Eric has above.) if you cant get the angles then get a horizontal measurement to the Peak off the front wall and then plan with the common roof angles until you are close to the distance measured for your ridge off the front wall. There is a page of common roof Pitches (angles) in your reference manual. M.
  6. no aware of anything 3D but there are 2D images available , check this thread from a few weeks ago https://hometalk.chiefarchitect.com/index.php?/topic/261-representing-people/

    Frustrating slab

I am not sure what was wrong with the plan you had ? curious why you started again since all looks okay in the plan you posted in the other thread ,(see my post above ) Trusses must always be drawn manually and they automatically replace the rafters assuming the same framing layout/spacing...... M.
  8. Then "uncreate them" ok seriously now.... delete the railings and just use the Post Tool in the Framing Menu , to place 4x4 or 6x posts and then set the heights individually. probably the easiest way , since you don't want to mess with polyline solids being brand new to X6. the Knowledge Base has lots of tutorials too like this one on post and beam structures which should help with the posts for you http://www.chiefarchitect.com/support/article/KB-00598/19/Chief-Architect/Framing/Creating-a-Post-and-Beam-Structure.html Mick
  9. I assume you mean you want them to "grow taller" and touch the roof Plane ? select each one in the 3D view and open it's DBX (dialog box) and increase the Top Height until it disappears inside the Roof Plane. You don't say what software or Version you have or how you got to that point but the above should work , otherwise try changing the "Room" height. M.
  10. Haven't heard of that issue before but good the Patch got it .... is the patch/update 16.4.0.81 ? it has a bug you find here on the Forum where you get crown moulding even if the Room is designate open below , such as in a two storey entry. I am still using Pro 10 and the 2015 trial so not sure is the Trial gets updates or not... M.
  11. This would/could be an endless debate and you now have an Architect's (David) point of view too , so it will depend on your personal ethics and what you ultimately want to do with the Plans you drew , of course if you pay the $2500 as David suggests I would assume you'll get 3D renders too , so your "hobby" will likely need no further "work". Of course you live in the US and Lawyers are a much bigger deal there as litigation seems to be a way of life for many. M.

    Frustrating slab

I looked at your old plan I have and if you left the Roof at 8/12 and the room at 9' the roof will be incorrect , even though it looks like it works as HD has just shifted the whole roof over to work , ie the ridge is no longer centered on the original barn. at 9' in the office the outer wall of the office needs to be set to 5/12 pitch and the upper pitch set at 8/12 starting 120" in from the Baseline. (see pic below) The foundation issue is because in the original barn you used a slab for the floor , per the tutorial , so there is no foundation built , so when you add walls to the office area it has tried to add the default foundation, a stemwall ......delete the slab and foundation if needed and rebuild the foundation as a monolithic Slab 6" thick. it will look thicker in 3d as HD adds a footing automatically (pic 1) , but you can turn off the footing in the foundation wall DBX so you have just the slab per Pic2. Frustrating slab

Yep post pictures or the plan same as last time..... HD titles don't do any Engineering , (nor Chief for that Matter) , it drew 2x6 Trusses cos that's what you specified..... but 28' isn't that far the average double garage is 22' so a 25' truss with the 18" overhangs is pretty normal..... M.
  14. you should probably Contact Tech Support about this rather than the Forum, did you check the Knowledgebase? http://support.homedesignersoftware.com/ you could also check your Virtual Memory is setup correctly and there is space for it on your hard drive M.
  15. Garages are part of Level 1 so that's where the actual doors should show , the cutouts in the stemwall will/should show on level 0 though. If you do a floor overview on level 0 you wont see anything on level 1 ie the garage Doors/walls etc all you will see is the foundation, which is why I suggested a standard overview which will show everything. If you cant figure it out upload the plan to the forum and i'll take a look at it Mick
  16. In the Build Roof DBX set the Roof overhang to the average/usual overhang and HD normally sets sloped soffits so check boxed eave on the Options tab too and once the Roof is build , then open each wall's DBX and on the roof Tab change the overhang as needed for that wall only, I believe this is a Pro feature ? perhaps HD Architectural has it too ? M.
  17. Personally I don't think I'd be worried especially by the time you incorporate all your own ideas etc , it will be your own plan.... and unless you plan posting stuff all over the internet claiming it's your Plan/design who will know ? Besides I am sure you aren't the only one "borrowing ideas" from that or other websites all the time. It's not as though every Architect in history hasn't used ideas of others since time immemorial , the house wouldn't be "Victorian style" otherwise.... Of course this is a personally opinion, and someone with legal expertise may weigh in too.... But there is a lot of info online too: google architectural plans copyright http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyright_in_architecture_in_the_United_States http://www.google.ca/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&frm=1&source=web&cd=7&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0CDcQFjAG&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.copyright.gov%2Fcircs%2Fcirc41.pdf&ei=VbkMVM2KHuKrigKf2YGQCw&usg=AFQjCNHz1uoFgE6cxzcQJdsQPIFHfBnGkw http://www.archdaily.com/328870/the-10-things-you-must-know-about-architectural-copyrights/
  18. the plan view posted is the foundation (only) plan ie level 0 , the doors should show on level 1 do the doors not show in a 3D overview ? try pulling (in plan view) the LH garage short height wall back to the exterior corner and continue the higher exterior block wall around the corner upto where the lower wall was attached, it looks like you have two different wall types there. M.
  19. You have Pro so are able to set different roof overhangs on every wall if you want to via each Wall's DBX on the Roof Tab so I am not sure why you need to make Custom (bespoke) Soffits but probably something I am missing/don't understand which is easy to do with email/forums..... Sorry I can't elaborate on why the Global setting worked , not sure myself.... all it is supposed to do is reset the origin to 0,0. The Siding size is 900x900 in your plan which is why I suggested that for the fascia/soffit but you may want it different from the siding? As Built / Existing drawings always seem to be the hardest to get done, there always seems to be stuff us Builders can do that HD can't M.
  20. I am uncertain what you mean by Bespoke fascia and Soffit or why you are not using the HD Roof options as from what I see in your plan, it looks like a simple 100mm deep flat soffit ( HD calls it a Boxed eave...on options tab). However check the box for Global Mapping on the texture tab and it should work .... your scale for the texture is 100x100 , if you want it to look like the Siding it will need to be 900x900 I also noticed the return fascia is 160mm high the front is 143 mm is that correct? Not sure if the 2 pieces of soffit are the same cos the global mapping fixes the issue in standard view except the soffit on the front remains running lengthwise whereas the side return is correct. so you may need to use the side return .skp fascia for the front too so the soffit runs correctly... M.
  21. As I suspected the Auto stairwell setting has somehow turned 1/2 the main floor into an Open Below Room , so I just assigned the "room" back to a Family Room ( could use any room or unspecified) and the floor is back...... you'll need to remind me where we are at Stairs are in and floor is back .... As per your plan My setting the result
  22. you can click on most temporary dimensions and it will open a DBX and you can input a exact measurement....the cursor will change if the dimension number (string) will accept/open and allow direct input of measurements. if there is a broken/unconnected wall in 2015 a new feature is a small icon will appear next to the cursor ( same as the angle snap one you had in the beginning) , the icon is always on the Edit toolbar too. But no Icon by cursor should equal no broken walls ,however you may need a wall/room divider to split the room ? Assigning the Room name/type changes other values too ie whether the room has a floor, ceiling or roof.... you wont be able to select the room if there is a broken wall though. Otherwise click on the floor of the room you want to assign as a different type and open it and on the general tab choose the type of room you want , if not sure just use "Unspecified" for now. I think Auto stairwell only works once per Stairwell , so you would need to delete the stairs/landing and start again is my guess. M.
  23. files that aren't "allowed" can be posted if you zip them 1st as zips are allowed , there is a 10mb limit per post though. no you cant downsize a plan without deleting things , you could make a copy of the plan and then delete unimportant stuff until the file is less than 10mb if needed. However now I know what you are trying that makes it easier , the issue I think is you are trying to "Paint a material" rather than apply a material to the item in question, it is always better to assign a new material than Paint something , I generally only "paint" as a quick fix m this way the materials list is more accurate too if you use it.... Open the library , go to Cedar T&G ,right click and choose copy go down to the User catalogue , open it and right click choose Paste select the new Cedar T&G and choose rename , add Vertical to end of name >ok select the new Cedar T&G Vert and Open it , on the Pattern and texture tab change angle to 90° >ok and close. In your Wall Definitions DBX change the Wall siding to the new Cedar T&G Vertical in the User Catalogue Open the Build Roof DBX and on the material tab change the Soffit to the new Cedar T&G Vertical and do the same for Fascia check boxed (flat) eave if that's what you want ? on the options tab and rebuild the roof. Strangely I found my Gutter had changed to the Cedar T&G too so had to go back in and assign a colour to my gutter in the Roof DBX again. If you want the soffit boards to run lengthwise along the building use the normal cedar T&G material not the Vertical one Hopefully didn't miss a step .... let me know how it goes... soffit short way soffit lengthwise
  24. No the Cad line was just to make it easier to place the stairs correctly 1st time as the stairs and landing must be the same width to meet Code ( minimum is 39") Looks like you got the 6'11" between walls ok from your image ..... You maybe right about a disconnected wall ....when you used auto stairwell it has made the whole area Open below , so you maybe just able to reassign the "room" as unspecified for now and the floor should come back..... does your cursor show the broken wall icon ? Post the new plan perhaps
  25. post a copy of your plan and I open it with the Trail version and have a look ,I cant see soffit in your pics but now see the Fascia issue. so you are trying to apply the Siding to the Soffit and the fascia as well ? or is it just chance they look similar? and which is the correct orientation? M.
