Compatibility - .plan from Chief Architect X6 to Home Designer 2016
DavidJPotter replied to CRSmith05's topic in Q&A
Chief Premier users can open a Home Designer file and then in "Plan Defaults" there is a check box that says "Allow this file to be edited in selected Home Designer Products". once checked that file can be shared with Home Designer software, if that check box is not checked in Chief Architect Premier then the file can only thereafter be viewed but not edited in Home Designer titles. The versions of Chief Premier and Home Designer MUST also match for this to work properly. DJP -
Sloped soffits, manually shaped and located. DJP

IF you have Home Designer Pro you will be in better shape relative to choice than the other titles, what do you have? (that defines what your choices are then). Chief Architect Premier offers the greatest ability and choice. Never the less, whatever you have I am sure it will be possible to do as you wish, can you please say what software you use and post a sketch of exactly what you want to end up with please. DJP

Auto-generated walls are self-defined, they are an mechanical automaticity. In order to fully edit them, you must go to 3D Preferences and turn off the command "Auto rebuild walls, floors and ceilings". If you do so, you need to then turn that command back on after doing whatever you need to do. As I mentioned before trying to edit or change auto-generated attic walls is mostly a waste of time (your time). The software is programmed to automatically create and recreate such walls automatically, that is all you are confronting and nothing more significant that that (a machine being a machine and acting like a machine). There are many rather useless "error messages" like the one you posted. The one you posted is only communicating to you that you are editing an auto-generated wall and nothing else (it is a mindless, mechanical, redundant "message" that you should merely ignore due to its relative unimportance to you or anyone else. Just do what you want to do and let the software be and do what it does. DJP

There are two "Break" tools, one for walls and one for poly-lines, they are similar in function but one only works on walls, the other only on CAD lines, are you using the right tool for the job? DJP

Unless I have misunderstood you, Mick is correct: you always control wall height by Edit-Default Settings - Floor - Ceiling Height settings or via a single room specification dialog - Structure Tab - Ceiling Height setting per room. This has been true since I started back in 1995 and is still true. DJP

Suite 2016 installed on my laptop smooth as glass. I wonder if you downloaded the 32 bit or 64 bit version? (My Vista laptop is 32 bit). When was the last time you defragged your laptop's hard drive? Do you have a functioning anti-virus application? Mal-ware application? Clean up your laptop's hard drive and try again is my advice. DJP

I have a Vista Laptop. I will try to install Suite 2016 myself and report back. DJP

You can extend the soffit by depressing the "CTRL" (control key), hold it down while left-click-dragging the soffit to where you need it to go (that overrides "solid" object's unwillingness to "occupy" another object's space so to speak, try it and see). DJP

I do not think so other than shopping for an older version at Amazon or perhaps E Bay. Your actual authority will be Chief Architect Sales There is not a lot of difference between 2015 and 2016 relative to Suite in my opinion. Each new upgrade brings generally greater choice and functionality. I suggest you contact Tech Support on Monday to see if they can help you. DJP

Mick is correct. In Home Designer titles (all), you have the "Display Options" dialog to do as you wish. In Chief Premier you have preset, named "sets" of layers for different viewing and drafting purposes, you also have "annotation sets" for differing drafting purposes, that is one of the many reasons that it costs more money for Premier compared to Home Designer titles. I am just guessing but here is a You Tube Tutorial video of what I think you might be the ill effect of: http://youtu.be/iKDmui0q4lM http://youtu.be/iKDmui0q4lM http://youtu.be/iKDmui0q4lM DJP

Please post a copy of your plan file and precise statements of what is "wrong" with the plan file or exactly what you cannot do that you want to do. DJP

I think this You Tube tutorial on "Floor Platforms" may be useful to you as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWibFFtn9Ik DJP

Most titles have "Shapes" in their Library Browsers and one of those shape types is a "Wedge" which can be stretched out to cover an entire floor in a single room, its height can be adjusted as well as its width and length and is your best choice for a slanted floor. Just between us girls, it matters little whether or not your floor is slanted in 3D views, in plans I rarely slant the floor in 3D, what I do is to place some text and an arrow saying that the floor is slanted by xx inches. With an "shape" covering the room's floor, you will of course have to select it first every time you want to reprogram that room but that is of course your choice to make. DJP

Here is a You Tube video of me trying to emulate your image using Suite 2016. In retrospect, I probably should have used soffits for the tub deck (easier to program than the cabinets I did try to use). You might also see what additional Library content you can acquire and perhaps use 3D Warehouse imports for symbols that you might need that Suite does not have by default: https://youtu.be/rDUp_kt21UA DJP

I think Kat understood your question better than I did at first read. Tell us what software you are using (title and version) and also more clearly explain what is going on. DJP

If you have a command (found under the "Edit Menu") called "Edit Area - All Floors", make a copy of your plan (save as, in case you mess the action up,you have something to fall back on) and use that to copy-paste your plan into another plan. Forgive me but I am not psychic and do not know what software title or its version number without you telling me, thus the generalized answer. DJP

Since the beginning, no legacy versions can open or edit files saved to a newer version (that is a major reason that I have and maintain so many legacy versions of Chief and Home Designer so that I can work with persons who use earlier versions. I cannot address the inability to import a .dxf file, that should have worked in most cases. DJP

Manufacturer 3d object in orthographic view is perpendicular in plan
DavidJPotter replied to dznr4u's topic in Q&A
I do not think there is a way to do that in Pro (in premiere yes) but you could import the symbol into Sketch Up, rotate the symbol and then re-import into Pro. DJP -
Being a twenty year plus user, I can say that I have not observed this myself but all hardware is adjustable in the dialog box when necessary. DJP

Make a custom wall type that has only one layer and assign "Glass Block" as its material. If you just want a glass shower wall, use that wall type in the Wall Drop-down menu, replacing whatever wall type you started with. DJP

Yes, your roof plane edge needs to be closer to the surface of the adjacent exterior wall. Roof planes cut off wall tops by default IF they are near enough to do so, otherwise the software will automatically place auto-generated attic walls like the one in your image post. Fix the roof and that will fix the errant wall. DJP
