Use interior dimensions as measured?

Okay, I am a total newb to this but something I expected to be easy is turning out to be very hard. I am working on remodeling a single room. I am trying to draw an as-is plan. But the entire application (HD Suite 2025) seems to be conspiring to prevent me from working with the interior dimensions as measured. Interior walls seem to snap to the grid *inside* the plasterboard layer. Measurements snap to the same place by default. This makes doing things like positioning a window to the measured distance from an interior wall really unnecessarily difficult. What am I missing?

read up on how to set what the dimensions measure to. Also, turn of "grid snaps" so it will measure to the item desired, and not to the closest grid
