ArmandDesigner
I created a door handle in Sketchup and want to use it on a cabinet. However, when editing the cabinet and changing the handle, I can't find it in the library even though I changed the Component ID to "Hardware." DavidJPotter
Importing a symbol (.skp) file requires you to give the symbol a name and it is then locatable via that name in the "User Catalog" section of the Library Browser. I can be assigned in "Edit - Default Settings - Cabinet - Door/Drawer tab" if you have Pro, not so sure about Architectural or Suite, take a look. solver
In Home Designer, all imported symbols like your door handle are imported as a symbol type Fixture and that cannot be changed. To make your handle available to a cabinet, it needs to be a symbol type Hardware. Changing the Component ID does not do this (that info is for the Materials List). You will need to manually place the handle on the cabinet.
ArmandDesigner
Hello David, thank you for your response. I'm able to import the SKP file in to the User Catalog. However, I am facing an issue while trying to assign it from "Edit - Default Settings - Cabinet - Door/Drawer tab". When I try to select a new handle from the Library, the content is filtered by "Hardware". Unfortunately, I am unable to unfilter the content, which is why my SKP file is not showing up. It appears that external 3D symbols are being imported as "Fixtures Interior". I tried changing the category of my symbol to hardware by editing the Components section to ID: Hardware, but it still does not recognize it as hardware. Thank you! Well... that is unfortunate, placing the cabinets hardware manually will be very time consuming. Thank you!
BalutFX Posted yesterday at 01:25 AM Share Posted yesterday at 01:25 AM Reviving a somewhat old thread to solicit help in trying to get the makers of Chief Architect to add this feature to Home Designer Pro. Now that Chief Architect Premier X17 has been released, I suspect Home Designer 2026 will be released soon. I already sent an email requesting the ability to import SKP objects as their intended use (i.e. door/cabinet hardware) instead of locking us into interior fixtures only. This seems like a decision that unfairly punishes Home Designer customers. I should not have to purchase Chief Architect Premier or hire a Designer or Architect to do something of my own designing. Designers or Professional architects should not care if I can import a cabinet handle or doorknob without having to manually place them. It’s not like I’m taking money out of their pockets with such a basic software function. After all, I paid $600 to use this software. Anyway, I am soliciting fellow Home Designer Pro customers to email Chief Architect with this request, and post your thoughts in this thread (unless the Chief Architect moderators delete it)
