  1. You don't HAVE to build a default roof first.

The software, at least Pro 2015, comes set to automatically build a roof once you have connected walls to form a room.

I turned that annoying to me behavior off long ago.

I generally draw my exterior walls, make adjustments (set to gable etc) as needed, then build the roof.

You may change from hip to gable any time, but you must manually rebuild the roof if Auto Rebuild Roof is off to see the changes.

  2. Try this.

Start a new model -- just 4 walls to make a room.

If Auto Rebuild Roof is checked, you will get a hip roof automatically.

Select any wall, open its dialog and check Full Gable under the Roof tab. Close the dialog.

If Auto Rebuild Roof is on, you will see a gable roof above the wall, if not, rebuild the roof and it will change.

Here is a good video to get you started on roofs.

  3. The image shows an auto generated roof.

Is it similar to your model?

I encourage people to learn the auto roof tools, or learn the manual tools, or better yet, learn both.

The simple answer to your question is you need to rebuild the roof using the auto roof build tool, or rebuild it manually.

Changing a wall to full gable does nothing until the roof is rebuilt.

  4. What version (Pro, Suite 2015, etc) of the software are you using?

Once the roof is correct, turn off auto build roofs, if it is on. Raise the ceiling height to create the flat part.

    Blocks

I do the same as Jo_Ann -- have a plan that contains a bunch of kitchens and one with baths.

Open plan, select the one you want, copy and paste into new plan.

There is no importing or linking of plans.

    Blocks

Have you selected items that are able to be blocked?

The edit toolbar is dynamic, changing to fit the current need.

  5. Chief and HD Pro are much alike and you may benefit from many of the videos aimed at the Chief user.

There is much good info in the Knowledge Base.

Chief has many good videos posted on YouTube. I learned by watching every video I could find.

Here is good one on roofs.

  6. I assume there is a room above the porch if you want to "extend the second floor to cover this".

On the second floor, draw walls to form a room where you want the floor. The reference display (F9, or Tools>Reference Floor>Reference Floor Display) may help.

  7. First picture seems to show a deck at the footing level. As Mick said, delete the unwanted, and make sure you are on level 1 when drawing the railing.
