Search the Home Designer website for insulation. Always a good place to start when you have a question.

    The answer is there.

Have you searched Help? The answer is also there.

  2. Why do you ask?

Previously I've drawn and modeled our home for some old remodeling projects

Why not use that plan and add the garage and breezeway?

And it's always important to say what software (like Pro 2020) you are using as answers/suggestions often depend on it.

  3. The somewhat standard way is to set your truss on a ledge built in to the foundation wall.

Is there a reason you are not doing this?

How do you benefit from using a top chord truss?

As for my question above, trusses are designed by the truss builder, not the program. You will need to understand what truss dimensions/type will be used to build a representation.

  4. The auto truss builder was added only a year or two ago and has plenty of bugs. I reported this one long ago.

The easiest solution is to draw your own trusses. See help/videos for how to -- it's not like you need to build them from parts, the program does the difficult work.

half of my walls disappeared and my roof was on the ground.

I imagine the walls are still there, the roof is just hiding them.

Auto roofs build over rooms, so you probably lost room definition somewhere.

Attach your plan file for the best help.

And here is some general info for new forum users.

  6. Few architects use Chief, so making that a requirement is probably not something I would do.

I'd focus on the ability of an architect to develop your ideas into a plan/design you are happy with, and on your potential working relationship with that architect.

I'll also suggest you not present your plan, and instead allow them to do what they are trained to do -- take your budget, wants/must haves, and building site, and create a design.

All that is if you are looking for an architect and not just a draftsman.

And if you do find someone using Chief, there is a viewer you can use to see their work.

  7. With Suite and Architectural, you need to get the roof to build as correct as possible, then turn off Auto Rebuild and work on the plan. This might involve adding, or removing walls, or simply moving walls.

Take one of those horizontal yellow walls and pull the end back disconnecting it from the exterior wall on one end and see what happens to the roof.

Try the same with the other yellow wall after reconnecting the first one.

  8.  Select the Terrain and see the Edit Toolbar -- or right click the Terrain Perimeter and see the same thing.

Also, help the helpers by completing your forum signature.

    Signature

Knowing what title (Suite, Pro etc) and version (2018, 2019 etc) you are using is key to providing the best response. Something like Pro 2023, or Architectural 2018 is all that's needed. Since this is the Home Designer forum, no need to include that, or anything about Chief Architect.

Please don't comment saying you included that info in your post, and please do not make another comment saying what you have, instead, place this info in your Signature so it's always available by clicking on your user name (or the 3 bars) at the top right of the page, click Account Settings, then Signature on the left.

Doing so makes it always available, and keeps others from having to hunt for it.

And, turn on signature display too.

  9. And looking at your floor plan images, all your roof baselines are in the wrong place.

See videos on the Home Designer website, Chief YouTube channel and my YouTube channel (link below).

This is auto built -- took 10 seconds ...

  10. Why are you using manual roof planes?

To fix the problem, delete the 2 outside roof planes, break the center one as shown and drag the edge out to the end of the house.

    Join the ridges.

You cannot join two butting roof planes as you are trying to do.

Roof planes are also polyline based objects, so you can union them if they overlap, and there is a tool to make one coplaner with another.

and still cannot highlight any of the rooms

That's because the program does not see them as rooms.

Usually one or more walls is set to No Room Definition. Clear that setting and see what happens.

Tip: On each floor, select a wall tool (any will work). Then holding Shift, marquee around the entire plan to select all walls. Open and change all at once.

And questions go in Q&A please. Tips is where you share your tips.

  12. Few people (at least in the Chief Architect product line) use the Space Planning features, and the ones that do complained about needing to delete the auto placed doors so they could place them as they wished.

If you look in Help, there is a section on what's new in each new version. Maybe something there.

I’m fairly competent in using hd now

Always mention what software you are using -- Pro, Architectural or Suite, and the version (year).

Not even the Chief Architect products are able to do what you want simply.

For the cabinets in the first picture, use shallow cabinets to get the fronts and to keep the backs from sticking through the roof.

For the under stair units, it depends on the door style. You can sometimes use a passage door with a Tudor Arch.

Also a Custom Backsplash can be used in creative ways -- search the forum for ideas.

    Any thoughts?

It's really helpful to post a screen capture directly -- no need to encapsulate it in a PDF.

Also key to know what software you are using -- Suite 2012, Pro 2024 etc.

And attaching your plan file -- close the program, 14MB size limit -- zip if needed, will allow someone to debug instead of just guessing.

Can I create attic trusses for a garage with 8/12 pitch?

Are you asking permission, or maybe you are having a problem creating attic trusses.

If you are having a problem, the help resources linked in the link above should get you started. If not, explain what's going on in a new thread in Q&A.

I am attempting to build a shed roof (flatter pitch) over a back porch

    What have you tried?

    it goes haywire

    What does haywire look like?

    Here are some tip.

Say what you have tried, and show the result. Often it's a simple thing and the problem can be resolved just by looking at the images.

Attach the plan file. Close Pro, zip if larger than 14MB and attach as you did the images. With the plan file, someone can take a quick look instead of guessing.

The program is not perfect. Sometimes you can make all the correct settings, but the program fails.

Sometimes, when working on roofs with Pro, you will need to use the manual roof tools.

The people here are all volunteers, so try to make it easy on us. No one wants to spend time repeating what is covered in the help system, or in a video.
