Help drawing gables & roofline

Recommended Posts

Hi there!  I am new to the Home Designer Pro software and am learning as I go.  I am helping a friend re design their house that was burned down.  I'm trying to get the rooflines to work out for the 1' bump out on the left front but can't get the ridge lines to line up right.  When I use the auto-build roof feature, the main roof line is messed up and doesn't look right.  I can draw it in Sketch-Up but I'd like to learn how to do it in HDP.  Can anyone help out?  I've attached pics of what I'm going for.  Thank you in advance for any help!!

Break the left side wall 1' back from the front creating 2 wall segments. Make the 1' wall a hip wall, and the longer part a gable wall.

Ha!  It probably is, Eric!  I'm no architect, for sure!! Thank you for the help.  I've been working and this is what I have, so far.  I've been playing around with manually drawing roofs.

That roof will easily auto build.

Did you not understand about breaking the wall?

This is how it should look.

For the garage gable, You can do similar. Break the wall, set it to full gable and it should auto build.

I would not have the gable go to the edge, but stop short. Better for water flowing off the roof and better for the builder.

OK - I was able to fix the gables and rooflines - thank you, Eric!  Now I'm having difficulty with an exterior wall material.  The area on either side above the roof on the front porch isn't what I want it to be.  I've changed the material on the 2nd story exterior wall and stopped the wall at the floor.  I've specified the material for the 1st floor.  But still the 2nd story lap siding is on an area where there should be board & batten.  Am I doing something wrong?  I saved my work, quit the program and restarted as well, just to make sure that wasn't the issue.

I cannot tell from your image what's going on. Can you show a closer perspective view?

You can also post the plan file.

There are several ways to fix this, but the cleanest is probably a Pony Wall.

When you click on that upper wall you will see how it drops down where the porch is. With a Pony Wall you can split that wall so it can have different materials top and bottom.

OMG - that is perfect!!! Thank you so so much!  You have taught me a lot today!  My friends will be so happy to be able to see how their house will look.  You rock, Eric!

Has anyone had any issues with losing the wall break when you change the material of one of the broken sections.

The break just disappears ...

Need to change the color of just a portion of the Exterior wall siding for a more modern look.

@OCDBldSvcs

It's usually best to start a new thread with your own question.

Please post images directly, not a PDF of an image.

And ...

Answers often depend on which title (Suite, Pro etc) and version (2018, 2019 etc) you are using.

You can help everyone by adding this info to your signature (see below for how to turn them on, then see mine for an example) by clicking on your user name at the top right of the page, click Account Settings, then Signature on the left.

Doing so makes it always available, and keeps others from having to hunt for it.

And, turn on signature display too.

@markdpatton

You have done a good job describing your problem, and thanks for doing your signature, but this should all be in a new thread.

You can simply start a new topic and copy/paste from this one to the new one. Then under Options, you can delete these 2 posts.

I'll take a look at your plan.
