Recessed lights in niches?

This will be the first in a mini-barrage of questions... just bought HDP 2019 and am diving in, and can't figure a few things out here...

 

So, my apologies in advance for this miniseries.

 

I'm trying to figure out if I'm able to put recessed lighting into the ceiling of deep niches - for example, in a 1' deep niche, I'd like a 4" recessed can light.

 

When I try to do this, the light seems to disappear, and I'm not sure how to check in elevation view where it might be vertically.

 

Any help appreciated!
