stairs in split level

nothing I try to do seems to work, stairs don't seem to want to go through wall(s), also not sure I'm using this forum correctly so please bare with me.

in this example lower stairs don't seem to want to through wall to connect to floor and upper stairs have same problem going through wall and connecting to floor above.

 

Clearly I don't know what I'm doing so could use some help.

You need to add openings manually, just as you would when building the wall.
