rosenbma 0 Posted May 26, 2015 My draftsman drawing my house in autocad 98 LT. I am considering purchasing of pro to do 3d renderings. Will it import a file from autocad 98LT as usable and editable data or will I have to start from scratch on home designer? thanks Michael

ChiefArchitect 34 Posted May 26, 2015 Hello Michael, Thank you for the question and for your interest in Home Designer. You can import a 2D .dxf file into Home Designer Pro. Once the CAD file is imported you can then trace over the floor plan to recreate it in Home Designer. Here is a bit of information from our help manual about .dxf files. Importing 2D Drawings 2D drawings are imported by reading entities from a.dxf file and creating the equivalent CAD objects in Home Designer Pro. Home Designer Pro 2016can import 2D.dxf files compatible with AutoCAD through version 2014. A .dxf file can be imported into floor plan view, a Wall Elevation or Cross Section/Elevation view. Only drawings created in AutoCAD’s Model Space can be imported into Home Designer Pro. Entities drawn in Paper Space are not recognized. External references (xrefs) are not recognized by Home Designer Pro, either. In general, all Z coordinates are mapped to zero. If an entity in an imported drawing has thickness, Home Designer Pro ignores it.
KirkClemons 9 Posted May 26, 2015 As to your concerns about compatibility, I believe that this shouldn't be a problem. Home Designer supports DXF files all the way back to Release 11/12.
Kbird1 158 Posted May 27, 2015 You can actually try it in the Trial version if you have it installed already, which I didn't think of this morning . (Can't save anything till you activate is all)

RobynKS 5 Posted July 12, 2015 Wow This is great info. Is there a video tutorial on tracing over Cad 2D plans? I looked but could not find it.
Kbird1 158 Posted July 13, 2015 Other than HD Videos Robyn , there are a few other sites that have some Free Chief Videos too , which since you have Pro can be useful too such as Chief Tutor http://www.chieftutor.com/chiefx1.html DXF vids at above site http://www.chieftutor.com/scotthall2/dxf1.html Scott Hall also has a Youtube Channel here https://www.youtube.com/user/dshall44/videos
fixento 0 Posted January 17, 2016 It the software will import Autocad LT, why won't it accept .DWG drawings?
DavidJPotter 201 Posted January 18, 2016 No Home Designer title will import AutoCAD .dwg files, only .dxf files as has been indicated with import properly. DJP
fixento 0 Posted January 20, 2016 I imported a autocad dxf drawing of a kitchen and while in 3D mode there are not walls. I looking out into a field, how do I get pro to recognize walls?
katalyst777 707 Posted January 20, 2016 An imported DXF is just lines, it doesn't have anything 3D.You'll have to trace over the lines with walls, place windows, doors, cabinets etc to create an actual 3D plan in Pro.
