Hi

I am using Home Designer Suite 2023 and am trying to create a home drawing that has an irregular footprint (like most homes) but create a single gable roofline (automatically adjusting wall heights if needed). The automatic roof builder on the other hand wants to make split gable roofs. Is there a way to do this in Suite or do I have to use Arch or Pro and specify roof planes?

Welcome

It's helpful to know what title (Suite, Pro etc) and version (2018, 2019 etc) you are using. This information is needed to provide the best response.

Please don't comment saying you included that info in your post, and please do not make another comment saying what you have, instead, place this info in your Signature so it's always available by clicking on your user name at the top right of the page, click Account Settings, then Signature on the left.

Doing so makes it always available, and keeps others from having to hunt for it.

And, turn on signature display too.

Not sure what you want to model, but roofs build over rooms. Use a Room Divider wall to create a room, set it to Open Below and you will get a roof above the room those walls define.

Hopefully I can clarify - there are only two roof planes over the footprint of the house with a single gable roof line going from the front of the house to the back. I managed to make the following but it was an awful lot of twiddling around with room heights on the second floor and adding fake rooms to get it right. I am wondering if there is a simpler way in Home Designer Suite 2023. Sorry if I am not able to explain this super technically - I am just a homeowner trying to model a home as accurately as I can to see what the remodel will look like.

I recommend that you consider upgrading to Home Designer Pro, that has manual roof tool manipulation and creation. It is more money and more learning curve but will enable you to do anything, roof-wise you wish to create.

It would be a big help to the people helping if you will attach pictures of the existing house. Maybe one from Google showing the roof from overhead.

I actually solved it in Home Designer Suite by making a rectangular footprint for the house with virtual rooms (invisible walls but asked for roof over the room). Got this nice result without having to pony up another 300 bucks. There is one oddity in the front. If I put a flat roof on the room just in front of the high gable roof and to the right of the smaller gable roof, the smaller gable roof becomes flat and I can't for the life of me figure out how to fix it.
