Can't get Shed Roof to build correctly

I'm working on a remodel of my existing house but I can't seem to get the shed roof to build correctly, it creates a full gable roof. The house has a shed roof in the middle and gable roofs on both sides. The only way I've been able to get this to work is to add a fake short second floor like I saw in a tutorial video that was created to answer a different shed roof question but the issue with that is that it creates a floor over the room when it should have the open beam ceiling on the underside of the shed roof.  See the attached files for a better explanation.

Did you set the second floor room to Open Below?
