Glad that you were able to fix it up, even if it does mean you will need to manually align the walls using the Reference Display instead of the "Align with Above/Below" edit tools.

I guess it's the limitation of the software.  I think I'll submit a suggestion as the Align With Wall is a great option.

I have an 8" CMU wall, 1" air gap and a brick veneer.  In 3D view the two layers are visible.  In my house there is a soldier course that tops the wall and finishes it off.  I tried the soffit trick but that didn't look good in 3D.  Is there a way to do this?  I should add that a section of the retaining wall is curved.

I used the parallel tool and made the LH edge of that plane parallel with the wall but it still reverts to the first screen shot.  I did check and the LH eye of the plane did not move at all as I thought.  Maybe it's a program bug.

I will make sure that LH edge of the plane is parallel -- don't think it is right now.

Alan, I've had similar results (with Arch version) of different exterior finishes not aligning well between floors.  I have noticed that depending on how closely aligned the walls of the two floors are before I click on the Align button, there can be more than one position that it can snap to.  For conceptual models I just sort of ignore this and move on.  Sometimes to limit the issue I'll modify the wall thicknesses to match better.  Not technically correct, but it lets me continue.  I hope with Pro there are ways to better control this somehow.

BTW I could get any of the pics you posted here to open.  It just sits there forever trying to load them.  What format did you post?

Please take a look at the two screen shots.  The second shows that the LH edge of the roof plane seems to have moved to the left thus cutting into the vertical wall such that the OSB is visible in the bedroom.  I adjust it so that it resembles the first shot and then a while later -- without me doing any work on the house (I was creating the landscape) it goes back to shot 2.

Any idea why this would be happening?

That addition on the rear is a sun room that I built in 2005.  I created the plans using AutoCAD Architecture but I much prefer HD.  Yes a ton of hip roofs and very time consuming to get them to join.  We purchased the house new and it was built like that.  Kudos to the framers.

Finally finished my plan -- spent about four hours building all the roof planes manually.  I'm going to go back and do an auto roof build to see what crazy results I get.  You'll no doubt notice the gap under the chimney wall.  Still trying to figure out why that is the only wall that has gap.

The issue was I had changed the Brick 4 and Siding 4 configurations so that when I clicked on Align With Wall Below the house wrap layer would align with the outside layer of the brick instead of the two sheetrock layers aligning.  In real life construction the inside face of the siding would overlap the outside face of the brick and in fact would extend down the face a couple of inches.  Apparently HD doesn't like this and hence the gaps between floors.  I reverted back to default and the gaps went away.

I think that HD should allow me to do that otherwise the Align With Wall Below function is useless where you have walls of different materials and thickness.  I'm not saying it's a bug but by design for some reason.  If anyone has a better way of allowing correct alignment without having gaps between fully completed floors then please let me know.

I have a foyer that is full height i.e. it extends all the way to the second floor ceiling.  I made the space the correct height and 4 of the walls extend to the correct height but 2 do not (look at the screen shot).  How can I make the two walls (the one to the left of the stairs and the one opposite the stairs?

Thanks katalyst. I'll look that over later today.  Strange that when I opened the file that Eric sent it was back to normal but as soon as I started adding walls to the second floor it came back.  My wall connections got all screwed up as well (see screen shot) -- maybe that was related.

Make the bottom tread a landing. You can shape the edge like any other polyline.

The stairs down to my basement have an intermediate ninety degree section where the treads are pie shaped.  How can I achieve that?

I checked the knowledge base but all I can see is the ability to create a curved stair.  Also how do I make the first two treads curved e.g where there is no side wall against the first two treads?

Please take a look at the attached screen shot and let me know what's going on.  I can't measure the gap but it looks like it's about 12⅝" which is the depth of the wooden I Beams that is the floor structure.

Have you looked at a Google image of the roof?

I hadn't thought of Google.  When I had it re-roofed about 15 years ago I gave the plan (that I did in AutoCAD) to my roofer to estimate.  Because of hail damage the insurance company shelled out over $8000!!!

From the help: By default, walls on different floors are aligned by the outer edges of their Main Layers. See The Main Layer.

 

Your main layers are the same -- Where do you want them to align?

Normally the outer layer -- the siding, overlaps the brick on the floor below (and in actual construction the bottom of the siding is about 2" below the top of the brick course).  So -- the inner layer of the siding should be the same as the outer layer of the brick -- if that is possible with the program, if not then the outer edge of the house wrap should align with the brick.

PS I guess I just answered my own question.   I changed the siding so that the house wrap was the first item on the main layer and for the brick I moved every item down to the main layer so that the brick was the first item on that layer and viola -- it aligns perfectly.

Yes I noticed that as well -- it's a very complicated roof and not being able to get up there to check the roof planes pitch -- it's a guessing game.   So I didn't have to keep running outside every few minutes I took some photos for reference.  I'm starting over with the second floor and roofs so I'll see what I can do.  The first iteration I let the system build the second floor from the first but as it's a storey and a half some of the walls have to be deleted or shortened and as a result I kept running into that "These are auto generated walls do you want to delete" message and it leaves a broken line outline of the wall and it can never be removed.

My first floor exterior walls are the standard Brick - 4.  My second floor walls are standard Siding - 4.  When I tell the second floor wall to align with the one below it aligns at the sheetrock layer i.e. the sheetrock on the second floor aligns with the sheetrock on the first floor.  According to the manual alignment is supposed to be the outer edge of the main layer.  I checked the standard wall definitions and both Brick - 4 and Siding - 4 have the stud as the main layer.

Also when I try to set the standard wall height on the second floor I get the attached message that there are varying wall heights on the floor above.  There is no floor above -- it's the attic.
