Using existing construction as reference

Hi all.

 

Very new to this, so maybe I should know this...but don't.

 

I am going to be remodeling my house, so I've started by laying out the existing construction.  How do I distinguish between the existing construction and the new construction, especially as it pertains to putting together blueprints and materials lists?

Commonly when I do a remodeling project I first make a  relationally correct copy of the home as it is, the save-as a copy for use of adding the proposed remodeling or additions.

One other thing I do is make a copy of the exterior and interior wall types. I then change the color of the fir framing fill color in the wall to white so it is obviously different than the new wall and rename it to have existing in the wall name.
