  1. Seems like my typical dilemma of late.  Rocking on feeling great and then BAM - didn't see that coming.

All was fine with my roof UNTIL, I added the Cathedral Ceiling.  I had one area on the left side of the Great Room I was able to correct but the right side - where the Porch shed roof overlays the Great Room gable roof is giving me fits!

    Is this really this hard?

  2. This could be considered Phase 2 of the more elaborate Door/Window trim question I posted last week.

    https://hometalk.chiefarchitect.com/topic/4706-more-than-simple-window-trim/?tab=comments#comment-25079

I have had pretty good luck with using four soffit pieces to create the actual trim I need over doors and windows.  That is until those pieces end up close to a perpendicular wall and then the program wants to default them all the way to that wall instead of standing off the way I need them.  Adding insult to injury, when one of those pieces is selected (see Elevation picture) it clearly shows as the correct dimension, yet it is rendered in both plan and elevation as extending all the way to the adjacent wall.

Clearly this must be some setting somewhere but I don't see anything in Settings nor do I see anything in the Soffit dialogue box.

Small detail yet will be wrong if & when I cut an interior elevation.

    Thanks!

  3. Great additional information. The window on the right is the solution from both Jo_Ann & DIG5050.  The window on the left is my four piece "soffit" header. I originally built this for a double window configuration, saved as a block then saved to my Library. Once the block is inserted, it needs to be exploded the each of the four pieces adjusted for length and centered on the opening (window or door).

Clearly Eric's Chief Architect solution is the easiest; however, for those dwelling (OK, pun intended) in Home Designer, it seems either of these solutions works. One thing I noticed is the apron size is not able to be set as the Arts & Crafts window can - although the A&C window relies on a specific trim profile.

    Thanks for all the help!

  4. I'm presuming that there's no easy way to set the trim as shown in the attached image as a default?

I'm thinking the only solution is to create all the trim as "soffit" pieces then create a block for the window & trim.  That would then be inserted in place of the standard windows.

Then again, not sure HD would recognize the block as a "window". If that's the case, then all the windows would need to be inserted with no casing and the block would be pasted on the wall around the window?

    Thanks

  5. Thanks to some great help from the Forum (thanks David J Potter!!), I've lost my fear of manual roofs and, quite frankly, haven't missed Auto Roof whatsoever!

I have to admit I started out making this Gable element over the porch by manually adding the wall on the second floor, building a couple roof planes & setting everything up.  Only struggle was not being able to cut a "hole" in the main roof.  At that point, I decided to try the Auto Floating Dormer.  From what you can see, I have a 95% solution.  My only challenge is that the face of the fascia on the dormer roof should continue all the way down to the main roof rather than having a small piece of eave - see example.

I presumed I could manually manipulate the roof of the dormer to fix this but no luck.  Easy fix, such as Explode the dormer, or more challenging?

    Thanks!

  6. Why does it always seem the simplest things are so challenging to figure out?

I have a 2 x 8 exterior wall with horizontal siding and a pony wall with stacked stone.  When I add a 2 x 6 interior wall (or 2 x 4 for that matter) I can see that the inside of the exterior wall looks "fat".  Sure enough, when I zoom in, I clearly see there is an extra line on the inside of the exterior wall which is not on the interior wall.  If I delete the Pony Wall, this line disappears.  I have tried every alignment setting for the Pony Wall but that pesky line still remains.

    Thanks!

  7. So I've been through the Roof Knowledge Base items and just can't seem to get out of the tangled up mess I'm in.  Three separate issues, one of which should be so simple, yet just will not correct.  The other two are much more challenging, at least for me.

    1.  I added the large shed dormer on the back of the house and all went well - except one wall, which is designated with Exterior Wall Type of Board & Batten-4 at the attic level yet, the board & batten will not show in the 3D view as the other two walls have (See Plain Dormer Wall pic).

    2.  I tried to add a front porch, which I would like to be a 4/12 (maybe even 3/12) shed metal roof.  HD defaults it to a hip roof when the Porch is added.  Changing the end wall to a High Shed/Gable Wall creates the shed roof but at the 9/12 default pitch.  Changing the roof pitch to 4/12 creates all sorts of insanity I can't seem to get past (See Front Porch - Start, Hip & Shed pics).

    3.  Last but certainly not least, has been a real challenge. I'd like the main roof to be a simple high gable.  Next, I'd like the Garage and Shop roofs to be a gable (90 degrees to main roof) but HD defaults to left end to a hip roof.  As much as I have manually tried to correct this, I have had no luck.  I do realize there may be a little funkiness when the two roofs (high main gable and Garage & Shop gable) intersect but don't think it will be a deal killer.  Other option would be to drop the pitch of the Garage & Shop gable to 8/12 to lower the point where those roofs hit the high gable wall (see Shed - Not Hip pic).

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated!

  8. All my exterior walls are defined as horizontal siding above (Siding-6) with stack stone pony wall below (Stone-6 Pony Wall).  Is there any way to add a 5 1/2" tall trim piece between the siding and stone? The only way I can think of is to create individual Soffit pieces and manually apply them to the walls - very labor intensive!

I realize the sample below actually has a small trim piece at the top and bottom of the trim board. I'm only looking for a single 5 1/2" tall piece.

    Thanks!

  9. First, admittedly, I'm very OCD!  With that said, I'd like to know if there's any way to get rid of the intersecting lines between my four soffit pieces which form the tray ceiling in the Master Bedroom.

To create the tray ceiling, I raised the main room ceiling to 10'. Then, I created the four soffit pieces which are all set for the same above floor height and they then form the drop down around the perimeter of the room. Looking at 3D view, all is good. When I look at the plan view, I see the intersecting (overlapping) portions of the soffits show as dashed lines. In reality, these lines should not show on the plan as it appears that the soffits are of different heights.

    Simple fix of program anomaly?

  10. Once again, everything seemed to be moving along really well. David got me back on track with my deck columns yesterday (great help creating a video for me!) and I was off and running.

Until, I hit the wall. The darn garage stem wall.  While I've read the Knowledge Base "Modifying Garage Floor & Stem Wall Heights" but this is still escaping me.  I'm also not sure what the absolute funkiness is at the corner of the attached image.

I realize the terrain is not correct and I'll adjust the grading once I get the foundation all correct.

    - I'm shooting for the garage and main house top of foundation wall to be the same height, rather than the garage wall higher.

    - I also want (have it this way now) the main house to have a crawl space while the garage & shop are a slab floor, 32" lower than the main house with a constant ceiling height (9') throughout the entire house, except where I have the cathedral ceiling and raised ceiling in the Entry.

I sure am glad there's no limit to the number of cries for help.  This forum has been awesome to help muddle through things.

  11. Thanks David - incredible help & effort on your part to make the video.

Good not to me on being more detailed.  Yes, I would like the upper wall open all the way to the peak but I think you have me armed with new skills to (hopefully) make that happen.

I'll post an end result shot once I make the changes.

  12. So this has to be easier than I'm trying to make it. As you can see from the image, I have a deck attached to the house, which has ceiling to bottom of roof framing.  The "walls" of the Deck (a room on the plan) are "railings".  I need to have a simple square column in each outside corner and another in the center up to the ridge beam.

    What I've learned:

    1. If I delete the "railing", which are actually the walls defining the Deck, the entire room, along with the roof, goes away.

    2. I tried to put in a doorway and then fill in a soffit piece made as the column. This worked at the wall end of the railing (I thought I found the solution, albeit a tedious one) but when I tried to add the door way at the outside railing, I discovered it won't work to the edge of the room. Nor can you shorten the wall from the deck edge.

    3. Just when I thought I was sailing along fairly well & getting the hang of this program, something else pops up making me feel really dumb.

The plan file is one I uploaded a couple days ago so the beams shown in the image file are not on there; however, the Deck definitions are still the same.

    Thanks!

  13. So there I was scrolling around the exterior in 3D after I installed all the windows and, suddenly discovered three rooms missing foundation walls!

The only thing I can remotely figure out is it is related to the fact that the Dining Room, Great Room & Kitchen are all independently defined using a Room Divider.

Also, not sure why there's a hole in the wall in the segment of wall where the door & stair go out to the Garage.

Just when you think you're starting to get the hang of the program, something simple bites you.

    Thanks!
