  1. I can't locate a refrigerator end panel in the library.  Anyone know if it exists?  If not, how would I make one 24" deep and with a face frame frame edge?

Does Premier have a more extensive library?  Refrigerator end panels are pretty common in my area.

  2. Opened your plan and a couple of things....

What is Code for Garage height were you are ? here it is 15' your's is currently 17'2" so you may need to lower the Pitch

Your garage door is not a standard height (84" or 96") , so use an engineered header (3 ply LVL) to squeeze a 8' door in , if needed, however check with your garage door supplier as many are framed to the stated size now , as the casing /frame is actually in front of the door , so your rough opening doesn't need any allowances. You will may need a Low clearance kit for the door too if you go with an 8' door in a 9' foot ceiling garage , once again check with your local supplier.

You might want to change your new TD Callout Character height to a scale of 4"  for ease of use ...I am not even sure what 4 65/1285th  is?  use copy and paste then you don't need to fill it in every time....

I drafted the plans for this project on velum and got plan approval and permit a month ago.  The shop is in the process of being framed today.  The project is a shop and in my jurisdiction that bldg height is allowed with that 9 x 8 door.

The 6 x 12 header sits 94 7/8" above the slab.  Before the plans were submitted, the panel garage door vendor confirmed that height is within tolerance for the roll up door we're having installed.

I'm designing our shop in Pro in order to learn the software.   It made sense to see if I could design it precisely to the hand drafted design specs.

  3. uncheck Soffits or set to them 0" thickness  (maybe not in Pro ? )

so make soffit material "opening -no material" (invisible)

and uncheck Boxed Eave on the Options Tab in the Build roof DBX.

PS you may need to Do a Roof Framing rebuild to see the effects of the changes.

    M.

I had already done all of the above and executed build ceiling and build roof.  None of that fixed the problem.  I just hit "save" and it re-drew the 3-D.  That may work, but you won't find that in the knowledge base...lol.    Kinda a weak point in the s/w they don't want to admit to I guess.

  4. Plan attached.  Notice that ceiling joists are not butting tight to rafters.  I've looked for a setting but don't see anything applicable, tried several times to rebuild framing....can't figure it out.

Edit:  I believed I solved it.  I made sure that "reference framing" was checked on both roof and ceilings joists.....executed build and it looks like that did the trick.  I'm attaching both the unfixed plan and the fixed plan (R1).   Have i correctly identified andfixed the problem?  Just want to make sure it wasn't a random fix.  Thanks for taking the time to look.

  5. Hitting F12 frequently to rebuild Walls /floors/ceilings and hitting Save (Ctrl-S) frequently too is always a good idea in HD Software. F12 is one of my mouse buttons now as it doesn't always update automatically , there is info in the manual about it , I'm surprised the Tech didn't mention it too. Their is also the Rebuild 3D icon on the 3D menu or wherever you place it with a custom toolbar.

the reboot your computer once a day is a windows thing too and the 1st recommendation if you see weird things happening in HD, but I am not aware of any MAC specific Errors graphically or otherwise , at least not reported here or CT.

I see/saw either two different roof planes or the RH wall is shorter than the Left , neither happened by itself , which is why I asked too look at the plan. Closing the plan would of updated it automatically which is why support saw nothing in this case.

Maybe it would help if I explained in a bit more detail.

The first issue when I called tech support 2 days ago was that inexplicably in 3D view the ceiling joists began appearing directly on top of the slab and the wall and roof framing had completely vanished.  The tech support guy walked me through several cycles of rebuilding with no change.  He then had me save and reopen the file.  Same result.  He then had me close and reopen the application and went through another iteration of rebuilding walls/roof....same result:  roof and walls not appearing in 3D and ceiling joists sitting directly on the slab.  At that point he asked for the plan.  He said it worked on his end and sent it back to me renamed.  At that point asked be to power down the Mac, power it up and open the app.  I opened the file and it worked.  It was clear from his comments that this was something he had encountered previously with Mac users.

The incident yesterday was similar in that the graphic display was distorted.  I had been working Framing Reference Marker to position wall studs and had not made any changes to wall heights or roof plans, at least not knowingly.  When I went to 3-D to view my stud positioning in the framing view I noticed the graphic display problem noted above.  I tried rebuilding several times to no avail.  At that point I hard booted the Mac and it fixed the problem.

I run Excel for Mac and have had display issues in that application as well .

  6. Post the plan and update your Sig. then we can advise....

looks like User Error to me....

    M.

Not user error.  The anomaly disappeared after I powered down my MacBook Pro, OS X 10.9.5 and rebooted.

This is the second instance where I had to power down my machine to correct a 3-D graphics problem.  The first was yesterday when changes I had made were not visible in 3-D.  I sent tech support the plan, the tech was able to open and view without issue.   When I told him I was working on a Mac he immediately suggested I power down and reboot.  It fixed the problem.  He hinted that this was not the first time he has encountered this issue with Mac.  I asked him if there a technical note available that I could take to Apple.  He said no.  He strongly suggested that I hard boot the computer several times daily.

Any other Apple users here encounter 3-D graphics display issues?

I'll post an update if this occurs again.

  7. Post the plan file so we can have a look.

As for getting rid of the double top plate sitting on the rake, here is my theory.

That gable end is a wall to the software, and walls are framed with a double top plate. I don't believe you can change that on a per wall basis.

I came to the same conclusion as well.  Problem is it's adding 54 lf of 2 x 6 to my cut list.  I'm going to have to figure out a way to eliminate them manually.

  8. Check out the attached screen shot of the orthographic framing view.  Look at the horizontal dbl top plate...notice how the left end looks normal but the right end changes direction.  Rotated from different directions doesn't change it.  What am I looking at there?

Also, how do I get rid of the double top plate sitting on the rake?  I see no need for it, the end rafter is sitting on the walls.

  9. Pro tends to create a Representation rather than Actual details, and I always note that on drawings submitted for permitting.

To answer your earlier question about why accurate framing details are important:

    1) As a builder I want an architectural design program to generate an accurate and detailed cut list.  Neither Pro or Premier offer this feature.  For example, Pro generates total lineal feet of framing lumber required but does not break it out by individual stick length which is necessary for bidding and purchasing lumber.  Tech support admitted all of the necessary detail information is contained in the program, however neither Pro or Premier offer this level of detail to users.  The gentleman whom I spoke with said they receive numerous complaints on this from builders.  Their solution:  manually add up individual stick length requirements.  Ugh.

    2) Often a plan reviewer will require an up close, specific construction detail be shown on the drawing.  In those situations the drawing must represent precisely what will be built.

  10. Eric, your first drawing is close to what I want except I see no need for the dbl plates on the rake; the end common rafter load is carried by the platform wall framing.  All you need are notches in the gable studs on which to set the rafter.  Regardless, I've opend up a new plan, reset all defaults, layed out the walls, selected gable roof which opened a "lesson" box that showed me how to specify Full Gable Wall at each end.....which yields a ballooned framed raked wall which is not what I want.

Attached is a pic of what I'm trying to build...focus on the gable end at the right side of the drawing.
