Missing Rafters in Auto-Dormers

Missing Dormer Rafters: I have yet to be able to draw an Auto-Dormer that is drawn with a proper roof over it. The framing is all messed up. I've attached a picture and a sample house plan.

I asked for help with this about a year ago and below is the reply I received.  I wonder if anyone has a resolution for this - the fix suggested by Home Designer Support is frustrating and very time consuming.

Roof & Rafter Issue:  I also have an issue related to the roof - there's a triangular object that appears, slicing through part of the building on the first floor. When selected, it is highlighted along with half of the second story roof.

Hi Grant,
I apologize for taking so long to get back to you about this case. I've spent a lot of time looking at it and this appears to be an issue within Home Designer itself. I showed it to our engineers and they are going to need to make some adjustments to Home Designer to get this functioning correctly.

In the mean time, you can grab those framing members and simply drag them out to meet the dormer and they should stay there. This would be easier to do in plan view than in camera views. You can turn on the display of your roof framing by going to the Tools menu then clicking on Display Options. In the window that comes up, scroll down until you find the layer Framing, Roof Rafters and then put a check in the Disp column. This will have your roof framing display in plan view and then you can drag them out to where they need to be."

Please post images directly -- no need to make a PDF of an image. This makes it easier for others as an image shows in the forum.

Generally, with structural issues someone will need the plan file to see what's going on.

Why is having framing important to you?

Have you tried drawing the dormers manually, or exploding an auto dormer and drawing manual roofs etc.

OK, thanks Eric.  This reverts back to the original issue where the roof rafters don't extend down to the dormer.

Also, I will require 11-7/8" floor joists for the second floor - how do I achieve proper roof trusses with 11-7/8" bottom chord without interfering with the framing?

Draw a truss, open it and change the settings.

That said, you would not normally have a roof truss built like that.

Your truss package will be designed by the truss manufacturer based on your plan, but not on any trusses shown in the plan.

No one in the USA can legally draw-design trusses except State Licensed Structural Engineers anyways. Anything you create yourself is PURELY conceptual only. In order to obtain a perfectly accurate materials List your model must be a perfect duplicate of how the intended house is to be built, the materials list only compiles exactly how you 3D modeled the structure and to the degree that it does not match the intended real structure will be how "accurate" it turns out to be. Few new users have developed the skill to accomplish this and actually few veteran users either because most users use Home Designer and Chief Premier to create plan sets only. Professional take off specialists often use Chief for raw data and then use a dedicated third party program to develop professional grade take off estimates. You are free to do as you wish but software is not a substitute for practical knowledge of the Building Arts,

Thanks for your detailed input David.

The concepts that I am working on will be converted to CAD and sent to the truss manufacturer and framers for review.

I've been an AutoCAD user (machine and tool design) since the early '90's - I thought Home Designer would be a time-saver due to the "canned" elements.
